Preparing Canvas Pad for Painting

I don't like painting on canvas pad without putting gesso on it.  I generally use 3 to 4 coats before I paint.  Oil paint has a tendency to soak into the canvas fibers.  This will greatly reduce the life of the painting. With gesso the paint will remain on the surface and not soak the canvas fibers.  This is just a standard canvas pad, Artist loft brand from Michael's.

When I am done with the painting I will post it. Thanks for stopping by.

Original VS. Print

The original is on the left.  I am having a hell of a time making prints.  Not sure what it is.  Is it the software, the scan, the printer ??  I have no idea at this point. The color is off,  darker than the original. If the ink was not so expensive I would keep messing with it.  I guess it is back to the drawing board.  More research !!!

Printing with my Epson XP-970

I purchased this printer about a year ago. Still not sure how to make it print well.  Ink is expensive and every try is important.  I am not sure if I am using the incorrect paper or my printer is off.  Hear are some the prints I made this morning.
Some of the prints have streaks in them.  Also, when they came out of the printer they were very wet.  I used two types of paper a glossy and card stock.  The card stock seemed to have better results.

The photo on the left is on card stock.

I will continue my experimentation.  I hope I will have better results in the future.

Software used to print:

  1. Paint.net
  2. Gimp
  3. Epson's free software that came with printer
  4. Krita

 My Sunday Morning warmup paintings.

My best attempt at a watercolor of a Cezanne painting.

An idea I had in my mind.  I will try it again with more detail.

 Saturday Morning Painting Practice

I had an idea of practicing color mixing this morning.  I watched several videos on the subject and just went right into painting.  I only used the primaries, burn umber, and titanium white.

I found the exercise very helpful.  The color harmony is easier to achieve.

A Very basic beginning. The painting was basic and just an exercise.

This is my workspace.  It is currently set up for oil painting.  I am using a practice canvas pad.  My next post will be a series of painting photos.  Currently I am practicing color mixing.
